Reclaimed Wood Furniture
Ron makes reclaimed furniture truly unique and complete with a backstory of the former life of the wood used. One great example is what he calls the Brunswick Collection. The old Hotel Brunswick on Route 66 is undergoing remodeling, providing Ron with wood for furniture that can start a new life now that its life as a hotel is over.
How did you get into your craft?
"There was always just something about old barns. I'm also an artist, and a lot of my drawings are of old structures. I appreciate the old structure and the rustic style. I started getting hold of wood, building small projects. Furniture always fascinated me, so eventually I started making tables out of this salvaged wood."
What do you look forward to the most in your work?
"Taking wood, cleaning it up, making it new, into something someone can use again. From a building falling down to a piece people use, give it a life of another hundred years."
"I like driving, finding an old shack that's falling down. Then I inquire to see if I can salvage it. Some folks are real friendly about it, some run you off. The logistics can be a nightmare... getting it, tearing it down, loading, tearing out nails. I enjoy it."
What would you say to a young person who wants to do what you do?
"If you enjoy it, dedicate yourself to doing it. Very satisfying, but hard work. Be ready to work."
